If I wanted a lighter one (and wasn't using IDM), I'd choose Neat Download Manager or XDM. Download speeds were excellent, I have no complaints here. Also, the program does not keep the download history, so it is as if you start over every time you close and reopen it.Īside from those issues and the lack of an updated plugin for Firefox, Motrix is a decent download manager. The program cannot be used to download videos, which was perhaps what surprised me the most, as almost all download managers I have used support this feature.

Motrix sets itself as the default torrent downloader without asking the user, that was a bit annoying for me.
If you are looking for more refined controls, I would say you are better off with qBitTorrent or PicoTorrent. This is not the most convenient option, but it is better than nothing. To add trackers, go to the advanced settings page and paste the URL list. There is no way to view the information about the companions, which also means that you cannot add any, either. For that, you have to use the torrent file, which then opens the selective download screen. If you use a magnet link with Motrix, you cannot select torrent content to download specific files. The downside to Motrix is that it doesn't have extensive control over torrent downloads (compared to a proper program like qBitTorrent). I guess that's because Aria2 is doing the heavy lifting here, so the download manager interface is pretty light on resources. What surprised me was that the resource usage during the download stayed in a similar range, which for an Electron app is not bad at all. The program uses around 125-130MB of RAM when running in the background.

Motrix is an open source Electron application, it is available in an optional portable version. To use it, go to the RPC Server tab in the extension and choose the same port i.e 16800. The program suggests using the Aria2 Download Manager Integration plugin for Firefox, and although it is no longer supported, it works with Motrix. I used YAAW, set 16800 as the port, and enabled download interception on Aria2c. Go to the Settings> Lab section and you will find the recommended extensions. The program does not have official browser extensions, but it works with third-party plugins that support Aria2. Motrix is based on Aria2 like uGet and Persepolis Download Manager.

Double-click a downloaded file to open its location in Windows Explorer. The last option supports normal URLs, as well as magnetic links, which I find very useful.
It has buttons to restart the download, delete it, and a copy link button. Head over to the Stopped tab, which is basically the paused / completed downloads section, and you can interact with the file. The program will seed the torrent automatically. Or you can paste a Magnet URI link in the first tab and the app will recognize it, get the torrent metadata, and start downloading the content. Motrix can also download torrents, you can drop a file on the second tab of the “new download” page to start the process. The download manager is located in the system tray and has a menu with options to quickly start a download. Click the advanced button and you can add a user agent, referrer, and proxy. You can rename the file, set the folder in which to save the file. The speed meter in the lower right corner indicates your current download speed, although you can also see this information in the download progress displayed in the right pane of the Motrix interface. The application will automatically pick up a URL that is on the clipboard. To start downloading a new file, click the + button in the sidebar. The Tasks tab is the main screen, it has three tabs of its own to access downloads in progress, paused and completed. Motrix has a dual pane GUI and sidebar, and the design is modern. The program is cross-platform and open source. Motrix has been on my radar for a while, I gave it a fair chance. But as a foodie, I try new ones from time to time. IDM has been my go-to option for almost a decade. Everyone has a favorite download manager.
